How long will my heating oil last?  When should I fill my oil tank?

These are important questions, and the chart below can help you find the answers.

Much like the kind of driving you do affects your car’s gas mileage, the age and condition of your oil furnace, the size of your home, and outside temperatures all affect how much heating oil you will use in a given time frame.

The chart below is based on an average Maryland home, and will help you answer how long will heating oil last. Adjust your estimates accordingly, erring on the side of caution to prevent running out of heating oil.

In addition, we strongly suggest you keep your heating oil level above 30 gallons. The chart below uses 25 gallons for easy conversion to other oil quantities.

Average Outside Temperature (°F) Approximate Gallons Used in 24 Hours Approximate Days 25 Gallons Will Last
