Heating Oil Usage Rate: How Long Will A Tank of Oil Last?

Heating Oil Fill

Fall leaves are crunching on the ground now, but the chill of winter is right around the corner. And every year around this time, countless Maryland and Pennsylvania homeowners start to wonder how long their heating oil will last this year. While there is no one answer to this question, surveying the factors that influence how long heating oil lasts can give you a good estimate.

Just like the type of car you own, how well it has been maintained, how old it is and how you drive influence how much gas it takes you to commute during the week, a number of unique factors dictate how long your heating oil will last.

What factors influence how quickly you will use oil?
• Age of the furnace
• Condition and maintenance level of the furnace
• Size of home
• Setting on the thermostat
• Outdoor temperatures
• Weather conditions (rain, wind, snow)
• Energy-efficiency of the home

In general, we recommend the following estimates of how long heating oil will last in the average Maryland home (2,000-2,100 square feet).
