Belcamp is often called Riverside and is located on the banks of Bush River, one of the Chesapeake Bay’s many tributaries, in Harford County, Maryland. Belcamp has the word “camp” in it, and so, as a tribute, we are going to discuss the history of camping as a recreational activity. The first name that comes to mind when thinking about camping’s great history in the United Kingdom is likely that of Thomas Hiram Holding. Holding was a traveling tailor from England who popularized it, but camping also could often be spotted on the banks of the River Thames in the early 19th century. Due to the lack of camping equipment versatility back in the day, river sides were perfect for camping because the equipment could be hauled to that location by boat! Holding’s books and adventures came later in the 20th century, after he published his book Cycle and Camp in Connemara. After it was published, a group called the Association of Cycle Campers was formed and continued Holding’s tradition of exploration. Holding also wrote The Campers Handbook, which shared the art of camping that is more similar to the modern-day practice.
To get to Belcamp (or Riverside), Maryland, you can take Interstate 95 or U.S. Route 40. Both major roadways pass through the area. In addition to busier highways, Abingdon is quite close, sitting along Belcamp’s south-western border. To get to Belcamp from Abingdon, just follow Maryland Route 9 north. Belcamp is also a good location to be in if you work or plan to work in Baltimore City. Both Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 40 can easily be taken south to Baltimore City, which is just south-west of Belcamp as well.
