Brookeville first began as a rural settlement in 1794, founded by a husband and wife named Richard Thomas Jr. and Deborah Brooke Thomas who came from a Quaker background. Deborah’s maiden name, “Brooke,” gave the town its name, “Brookeville,” since much of the land the family owned was acquired through her inheritance. Brookeville is the definition of a small Maryland town, housing only about 135 people within its borders. Brookeville’s old age means that it has a long history with the United States, starting during the War of 1812. Brookeville was a place of refuge for the residents of Washington D.C. who had been drove out by the British and their fire. The town enjoyed the title of “U.S. Capital for a Day” in 1814 during the war, when James Madison stayed overnight with other Washington residents and then rode to Washington ahead of the British during the next morning. The towns self-created logo features its prestigious title, along with a bald eagle, banner and the date in which it gained its national honor.

Portions of Brookeville’s Maryland zip code, 20833, lie in both Howard and Montgomery County. The town of Brookeville is centered over Georgia Avenue, also known as U.S. Route 97. As mentioned, the town is a historic place with connections to the Quaker tradition, the War of 1812 and the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. Some important locations to the town’s character and charm include the Valley Mill House, the Margaret Brooke House, the Brookeville Academy Community, the Owl’s Nest Bed & Breakfast and the Reddy Branch Stream Valley Park. In fact, Reddy Branch waterway flows around the northern point of Brookeville, leaving its southern border as the only area not encompassed by water.
