Fawn Grove, PA is located at about the closest point you can be to the Mason-Dixon Line without being in the state of Maryland! The southern border of the Fawn Grove borough follows along the Mason-Dixon Line. You can find Fawn Grove at the intersection of Route 425 and Route 851, known locally as Market Street and Main Street, respectively. The geographical boundaries of Fawn Grove almost seem to be a perfect square until you lay eyes on the north-western corner, which explodes out into a jagged, triangular shape. Fawn Grove sits in York County and takes up a very small amount of land—about 1.6 square miles! It also has a relatively tiny population of about 450 people. However, that data is quite dated, since it was taken from the 2010 census records. It also seems that the population of Fawn Grove has decreased since the U.S. census was conducted in 2000. That census record about 460 people who were living in the borough of Fawn Grove. A portion of these 450 people make up approximately 140 families whose children can attend public school within the South Eastern School District.
Fawn Grove did not start out as a borough of York County, but rather was settled as a small village in 1763. The land was originally owned by Richard Webb, who leased it to Samuel Hugo and Amos Waters. At the time of initially settling the land, the area was populated with herds of deer. The immense amount of young deer in the population the frequented the area shocked residents for years. Due to the presence of a large nearby grove that attracted the animals, the name “Fawn Grove” was decided on. Many years later, in 1881, the community of Fawn Grove was incorporated by York County as a borough.
