Fulton is both a CDP, or census-designated place, and unincorporated community that resides in Howard County, Maryland. Fulton is one of the older communities in Maryland, first survey in 1700 and settled nearly 200 years later in 1882, it was named after the locally famous Charles C. Fulton of the Baltimore Sun. Fulton is just outside of Maple Lawn and north of the Patuxent River, specifically in the area of the T. Howard Duckett Watershed. It makes since that Patuxent River is situated right below Fulton because the man who first surveyed the land, Thomas Browne, was also known as the Patuxent Ranger (likely due to all the work that he did regarding surveying land near the Patuxent River. Fulton is right next to Reservoir High School, Lime Kiln Middle School and Maple Lawn Farms.
Reservoir High School has a well-known, competitive marching band and often hosts U.S. Bands competitions, inviting schools such as Century High School to compete against them on their football field. Maple Lawn Farms raises state-famous turkeys, which are bought on-site by people from all over Maryland around Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Hammond Branch waterway also flows near the northern border of Fulton. Prominent locations in the commercial segment of the residential community of Fulton include D & S Karate Inc., Hackground, Looney’s Pub, The Vine, Dunkin’ Donuts and Pepperjacks Subs. Maryland Route 216 serves as the primary connector between Fulton and the rest of the state. The road can be followed south to Washington, D.C., making Fulton an attractive, residential location for adults with families that want a mellow homestead after a day of being in a high-paced, urban environment.
