Jessup sits to the north-east of our nation’s capital, just south of Ellicott City, Hanover and Columbia. U.S. Route 1 and the Baltimore Washington Pkwy (also known as Route 295) can be used to travel between Washington D.C. and Jessup, since both major road pass on opposite borders of Jessup’s geographical territory. Additionally, Maryland Route 175 and U.S. Route 32 run near the Jessup community. What does this mean for residents in Jessup? It means that they are surrounded by hubs of activity and can easily access locations with plenty of commercial opportunity, such as D.C.! It also means that Jessup may be a busier place than many who work in D.C. would like to inhabit when they are away from work. Jessup’s territory has a crescent shape to it, reminiscent of a banana. The lower half of Jessup is very industrial. Some of its central locations include the CFX Colfax Corporation, Waste Management for Annapolis Junction, and four correctional facilities. These include the Jessup Correctional Institution, Dorsey Run Correctional Facility (named for the waterway that passes by its grounds), Brockbridge Correctional Facility, and the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women.
Near Maryland Route 175, Jessup becomes more residential and commercial, featuring bussines such as Stieglers Florist, Duvall’s Market, Washington Business Interiors, and An Artful Affair. The Jessup Elementary School is also located near 175, next to the Jessup Community Hall (an auditorium for community productions). Jessup is located at a historic location, once known to be the spot where Spurrier’s Tavern resided. Spurrier’s Tavern was an important historical landmark because George Washington’s connection to it, specifically throughout his presidency. However, the building suffered from fires and deaths in the owner’s family, eventually resulting in its demolition.
