Lewistown is located east off of Catoctin Mountain Highway, also known as Route 15, in Frederick County, Maryland. Lewistown is located directly south of the Catoctin Furnace and Catoctin Mountain area, which is a highly rural, mountainous area with amazing wildlife, scenery and outdoor activities for families and people of all ages. These recreational activities can include Catoctin Wildlife Preserve, Cat Rock & Bobs Hill Natural Area, Middletown Watershed, William Houck Campground, Catoctin Mountain Park, Camp David, East End Park and Seymour B. Cooper Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary.
Catoctin Wildlife Preserve is a great place for children and adults to visit. It functions differently from a zoo in many ways, but still offers the same (or even an enhanced) experience. There are more interactive opportunities in the preserve, where visitors can touch and feed animals that sometimes appear like they have free run of the park! For example, when you walk into the park several parrots are seated on a tree, unrestrained by any cage at all. Catoctin Wildlife Preserve now has two safari rides, including the opportunity to see zebras, camels, ostrich and bison. The park is over 50 acres and allows you to roam free, taking your time to experience all of the different animal ambassadors in segments broken down by point of origin, such as North America (where you can find the alligators). To name a few highlights, Catoctin currently has two white tigers, a jaguar, a sloth, a family of baboons and a family of otters! Those are just some of the hundreds of different species that can be found throughout the park. They even have a building completely devoted to venomous snakes.
