As Codorus Creek travels south and branches off into its southern portion, traveling towards the west, the winding waterway eventually arrives and circles around the borough of New Salem, also referred to as York New Salem. To the north-east of Stoverstown, up Route 3042, lies York New Salem’s geographical boundaries. The town’s center manifests at the intersection of Salem Road, also known as George Street, and Pennsylvania Route 616. Some hot spots to visit in town include Jim &Nena’s Pizzeria, Chuck’s Automotive, St. Jacob’s set of churches, T & J Bowling Corporation, The Sherwood Inn, A Bit More Tack (an equestrian tack shop), Nighthawk Entertainment (a DJ service and club) and the Best Western Black Hills Lodge. The borough of New Salem has a lot to offer to a fairly small population—at the time of the last census, only about 720 people had chosen the York New Salem borough to be their home.

The name “York New Salem” comes from the origin of the land’s first settlers, who flocked from both Salem and other parts of York County. Thus, the name “York New Salem” or just “New Salem” was adopted. As is common with many Pennsylvania towns, New Salem’s first settlers were immigrants from German who came to further their agricultural practices, find religious freedom and/or make a new life for themselves and their families. New Salem’s immigrant community eventually became populated with immigrants from many areas, whose presence founded and enhanced the American identity.
