Red Lion is located in the state of Pennsylvania and is an incorporated part of York County, functioning as one of the county’s boroughs since 1880. The area was first settled in 1852 and was named for the Red Lion Tavern, which was one of the area’s first pubs. It gained popularity as a location due to its location along the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad, which was often called the “Ma & Pa.” Red Lion has enjoyed state-wide and nation-wide recognition for a few different occupations. First, Red Lion was known as a renowned cigar producer. At one point, the community was producing over one million cigars per month, accounting for approximately 10% of total U.S. cigar supply! This led to a famous in the town, which involves raising up a large cigar on New Year’s Eve.
After its stint making cigars, Red Lion became national recognized for its furniture manufacturing. This occupation was continued for more than 100 years and involved the production of hand-made furniture. In the modern era, Red Lion’s factories have become more specialized over the last few decades and tend to produce kitchen cabinets and retail store fixtures. Due to its exceedingly interesting history, Red Lion has had its Consumers Cigar Box Company and Red Lin Borough Historic District places of the National Register of Historic Places. Red Lion is relatively close to the Harrisburg area (about 35 miles), which means that many commuters chose to build or buy homes in and around the Red Lion community.
