If you’re ever taking a drive through York County, Pennsylvania, be sure to drop by the lovely borough of Shrewsbury! It’s a relatively large borough in York County that holds nearly 4,000 people within its geographical boundaries. Shrewsbury has seen a population increase of nearly 700 people from 2000 to 2010 (according to United States census records), which means that its growth has been larger than many of the entire populations of some boroughs in York County. Did you know that Shrewsbury borough USED to be part of a larger area with the same namesake, known as Shrewsbury township? In fact, after I was settled in 1800 Shrewsbury was just a small village known by its German settlers as “Strassburg,” which is German for “the town by the street or road.” Eventually English began to move to the area, inspiring a consensus to change the name to the similar sounding “Shrewsbury.” The town was officially incorporated in 1834 by an Act of the General Assembly. Eventually, the historic district of Shrewsbury was added to the National Register of Historic Places and deemed an important cultural research.
