Some residents of Union Bridge would characterize its location as sitting at Piedmont Plateau’s heart, where rolling hills never end! The community of Union Bridge began as an agricultural one and has stayed that way, but has also incorporated many modern day innovations and changes in industry. It was first settled by the Farquhar family, who had first made their home in Pennsylvania. The town is filled with sugar maple shade trees, which are thought to have originated from just two trees that Elizabeth Farquhar brought when she arrived from Pennsylvania in the mid-18th century. Little Pip Creek flows through the town, essentially cutting it in half, and so a bridge was constructed uniting the two parts. This inspired the name “Union Bridge,” which was chartered as the official town name in 1872 by an act of the Maryland General Assembly.
