At one point in time, one of Upperco, Maryland’s most notable residents was renowned brain surgeon Dr. Ben Carson and his wife, Lacena “Candy” Rustin (who now shares the last name “Carson”). They purchased a 48-acre mansion in the small Maryland town of Upperco in 2001, which was their primary residency and their second home in Maryland after they had previously lived in West Friendship, Maryland. Carson worked at John Hopkins at this time, meaning that he was able to easily commute from his large residence in Upperco. After living in Upperco for 12 years and overcoming Dr. Carson’s prostate cancer through emergency surgery at John Hopkins Hospital in 2002, Dr. Carson and Mrs. Carson decided to move to West Palm Beach, Florida. However, they eventually came back up the east coast and purchases another mansion in Vienna, Virginia after Dr. Carson was appointed to be Secretary of House and Urban Development.
