West Friendship is one of the more affluent parts of Maryland’s Howard County area and is an unincorporated community, like many that we have discussed before. You can find the community’s rural landscape and friendly residents near the junction between Interstate 70 and Maryland Route 32, as well as Maryland Route 144 (also known as Frederick Road). If there is a middle of the state of Maryland it might be near West Friendship. The state’s wonky shape doesn’t yield a true middle, but West Friendship does seem to find a centralized point in Maryland. Its located to the west of Baltimore and to the south of Eldersburg, making it a great rural area for Howard County residents who want a peaceful place to live after a busy day at work in Baltimore City, or perhaps even Washington D.C. if residents are willing to make the commute there. While Washington D.C. is close by and offers a reasonable commute, traffic can sometimes lengthen the expected commute times from those living in the West Friendship area.
West Friendship began to grow after its settlement in the late 18th and early 19th century due to travelers who were seeking out North America’s wild west and need rest points and commercial hubs before they traveled onwards. These land developments became grants that were afforded to wealthy families that sought to develop those areas. Many of those families still live nearby, preserving their history and tradition in their locality.
