The city of Westminster, Maryland, first settled in 1764, is one of located in the center of Carroll County and functions as the county’s seat. Westminster is a thriving area with several businesses, restaurants, residences, public services and educational opportunities for all who live there and for visitors who are just passing through. Westminster also acts as a hub of activity for more rural locations, such as Winfield, Sykesville, Eldersburg, Gaither and Libertytown. Some prominent locations within the borders of Westminster include McDaniel College, the Carroll County Farm Museum, the Carroll County Regional Airport, McDaniel College Golf Club, Tevis Energy, Coffey Music, the Carroll County Library Westminster Branch, tCUP Café, Johanssons Dining House, O’Lordans, Rocksalt Grille, the Westminster Family Center and Carroll Hospital.
An extensive written history of the city of Westminster can be found on there government website, which was written by former mayor Kevin Dayhoff, who served the residents of Westminster from 2001 to 2005. Dayhoff served nearly 18,000 people, which has likely increased to nearly 20,000 since the 2010 Census was conducted. Westminster’s motto is “Where history meets tomorrow,” although I do not know the origin. The city of Westminster is pretty far from Baltimore, but could still be considered a suburb. This is because many who commute to Baltimore for work (45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic) choose to live in or around Westminster and the Carroll County area. In total, Westminster spans about 6.7 square miles, with approximately 0.01 of that area being covered by water!
